EU: Creation of a Palestinian State is a Key Step for Regional Security

According to Cursorinfo, Sven Koopmans, the European Union Special Representative for Peace in the Middle East, has called the creation of a Palestinian state an important step for regional security. Despite strong opposition from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Koopmans stated that the two-state solution remains achievable.

In an interview with AFP, Koopmans emphasized that the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas, as well as the need for international support, make it impossible for Netanyahu’s government to ignore European perspectives on resolving the conflict.

The Israeli government firmly opposes the creation of a Palestinian state, even though the issue has become more urgent following the October 7 attack by the terrorist group Hamas, which sparked a devastating war.

Koopmans, a Dutch diplomat, noted that the refusal of one side to accept the “necessary outcome” should not halt efforts to find a solution. Last month, the European Union invited Israel to discuss the situation in the Gaza Strip and human rights. Israel agreed to the meeting after July 1, when Hungary, which supports Netanyahu’s government, will take over the EU presidency.

“It is important to hold such a discussion,” Koopmans said. “I am confident that this meeting will lead to very substantive discussions about what we expect from our partner Israel. And this concerns things we do not see at the moment.”
