On Sunday, July 21, US President Joe Biden made a sensational statement: he decided to end his participation in the presidential campaign and withdrew his candidacy from the 2024 election. He announced this on his page in the social network X.
“It was a great honor for me to serve you as president. “While I have intended to run for a second term, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and country if I step aside and focus on fulfilling my duties as president for the remainder of my term,” Biden said.
The president also announced that he would contact citizens later with more detailed information about his decision.
The US presidential election is scheduled for November 5, 2024.
It will be recalled that in June, Joe Biden and former US President Donald Trump took part in a debate, which became a real test for the current head of state. As a result of Biden’s lackluster performance in the debate, the Democratic Party has been urged to consider a replacement candidate.
Previously, Biden said that he was ready to withdraw from the election race if he had serious health problems. Later it became known that he had contracted COVID-19.
Biden’s decision is expected to have a significant impact on the upcoming election, leaving the Democratic Party scrambling for a new candidate at short notice.
