The General Secretary of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) of Germany, Carsten Linnemann, expressed concern about the low level of employment among recipients of state aid, in particular Ukrainian refugees. In an interview with media group Funke, Linnemann noted that a large number of people in Germany “do not want to work in principle,” which he believes is the result of excessive social benefits.

The politician emphasized that in many European countries more than 50% of Ukrainians find work, while in Germany this figure is only 25%. He expressed the opinion that the government does not sufficiently encourage refugees to find employment, offering only social assistance without work requirements.

“Ukrainians also protect our freedom, but the benefit should be mutual,” Linnemann said, hinting at the need to introduce measures that would encourage Ukrainian refugees to look for work. Germany’s federal government is considering tougher rules, including cuts to unemployment benefits or illegal employment.
