Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has ordered a direct strike against Israel in response to the assassination of Hamas political leader Ismail Ghaniyya, The New York Times reported, citing Iranian officials. According to unnamed sources, Khamenei made this decision at an emergency meeting of the Supreme National Security Council of Iran, held in the morning of July 31.
Iran and Hamas have accused Israel of orchestrating Ghania’s murder, and possible responses are now being discussed in Iran. In particular, options for a combined attack on military facilities near Tel Aviv and Haifa are being considered, as well as possible coordinated actions with allied forces in Yemen, Syria and Iraq.
Iranian officials stress that Ghania’s death is not only seen as an accidental loss, but also a serious affront to Iranian security, posing a threat to anyone who might find themselves in a similar situation.
