One of the leaders of the Palestinian group Hamas, Ismail Haniya, was killed yesterday as a result of shelling. The incident caused an immediate reaction from Iran, which initiated an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council scheduled for 11:00 p.m. Kyiv time, reports Ukrinform.
Iran sent a request to hold a meeting of the UN Secretary General and the diplomatic mission of Russia, which chairs the Security Council in July. Russia, Algeria and China expressed support for Tehran’s initiative. Russia and China were particularly harsh, condemning the liquidation of Chania.
UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres emphasized that such actions could lead to a dangerous escalation of the situation in the Middle East. In turn, the supreme religious leader of Iran, Ali Khamenei, has already announced a possible response to this attack, blaming it on Israel, although the official representatives of this country have not yet provided comments.
This event threatens to significantly aggravate the situation in the region, which is already tense. The international community is closely following the development of events, waiting for the results of the emergency meeting of the UN Security Council.
