Ukrainian Greco-Roman wrestler and MP Zhan Beleniuk fell victim to this crime, highlighting security concerns in the Olympic Village.

According to Beleniuk, the incident occurred towards the end of the competition when participants were preparing to leave. The athlete lost a watch, while other athletes reported missing money and other valuables. Beleniuk speculated that the thefts might involve cleaning staff, who acted discreetly to avoid exposure. “In Brazil, during previous Olympics, thefts were common, but here the thieves proved to be more cautious,” he noted.

Thefts at the Olympics: Random Occurrence or Systemic Issue?

This incident is not unique, as thefts at the Olympics have occurred before, raising questions about the adequacy of security and the safeguarding of athletes’ personal belongings. The Olympic Village should be a place where athletes can focus on their competitions without worrying about the safety of their possessions.

Zhan Beleniuk, known for his resilience and skill, previously won a silver medal in Rio-2016, gold in Tokyo-2020, and bronze in Paris-2024. Despite his successes, Beleniuk announced his retirement, emphasizing the importance of preparing new generations of Ukrainian wrestlers.

Performance of the Ukrainian Team at the 2024 Olympics: Achievements and Challenges

The Ukrainian team completed its participation in the Olympics on August 11, with wrestler Muraz Mchedlidze competing last. Despite his failure to win bronze in the 97 kg weight category, Ukrainian athletes showcased a high level of preparation and skill.

Overall, the 2024 Olympic Games began on July 26 under adverse weather conditions, yet this did not hinder the solemn opening attended by numerous guests and spectators. The flag bearers of the national team were Elina Svitolina and Mykhailo Romanchuk, symbolizing the high level of Ukrainian sports.

The participation of 147 Ukrainian athletes in this year’s Olympics was a significant event for Ukraine, demonstrating the nation’s strength and potential on the international stage.
