French police have reported the arrest of a man suspected of attacking the “Beit Yaakov” synagogue in the resort town of La Grande-Motte, located in the south of the country. While the suspect’s name has not yet been released, it is known that he was apprehended in the city of Nîmes.
This incident has sparked significant concern, particularly within France’s Jewish community, which has faced a rising tide of antisemitism in recent years. French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin praised the professionalism of the police in handling the investigation.
The explosion near the synagogue seriously injured a police officer who was patrolling the area. The blast damaged the synagogue’s doors and two parked cars nearby. One of the vehicles contained a gas cylinder, which was determined to be the cause of the explosion.
According to sources close to the investigation, surveillance cameras captured the attacker waving a Palestinian flag during the incident. This detail has intensified suspicions of a terrorist motive behind the attack.
French President Emmanuel Macron strongly condemned the attack, calling it an act of “intolerance and hatred” that has no place in modern society. Prime Minister Gabriel Attal and Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin visited the synagogue on August 24th to express their solidarity with the local community. “This act of antisemitism has shocked all republicans,” Attal said during his visit.
As reported by Time Ukraine Israel, citing Newsru.co.il, the suspect was identified thanks to the joint efforts of French and Israeli intelligence services. The publication also notes that investigators are actively working to uncover any links the arrested individual may have with international terrorist organizations.
