The Russian embassy in Paris has accused French authorities of “refusing to cooperate” following the arrest of Pavel Durov, founder of the popular encrypted messaging service Telegram. Durov, who also holds French citizenship, was detained in France just days before his scheduled court appearance.

According to AFP, the Russian embassy issued a statement condemning the French side for not providing clear explanations for the arrest and for refusing to ensure Durov’s rights, including access to consular services. “We immediately requested that the French authorities explain the reasons for his detention and ensure the protection of his rights. To date, the French side continues to refuse to cooperate on this matter,” the Russian embassy stated, as reported by RIA Novosti.

The 39-year-old Franco-Russian billionaire was arrested at Le Bourget Airport between 7:30 PM and 8:00 PM, accompanied by his bodyguard and assistant. Durov had arrived from Baku (Azerbaijan) and was planning to spend the evening in Paris before continuing his journey, according to one source.

Durov is set to appear in court on Sunday, where he will face formal charges.
