On Thursday evening, French Prime Minister Michel Barnier announced that the new government would be presented “before Sunday.” The announcement came after his meeting with President Emmanuel Macron at the Élysée Palace, where Barnier submitted a list of 38 ministers.

Michel Barnier, a prominent right-wing politician and former European Commissioner, was appointed prime minister on September 5. His main task is to guide France out of the prolonged political crisis following the dissolution of the National Assembly in June this year.

Political Balance and Negotiations

Barnier has been engaged in negotiations with several party leaders in an effort to ensure representation from various political forces in the new cabinet. Although he has not yet revealed specific names, it is expected that both right-wing and centrist parties will be included in the new government.

According to inside sources, Bruno Retailleau, the leader of the right-wing “Les Républicains” party, is likely to take over the Ministry of the Interior. Jean-Noël Barrot, the former Minister for European Affairs (MoDem), is expected to be appointed as Foreign Minister, while Sébastien Lecornu, the current Defense Minister, is likely to retain his position.

Economic Challenges and Social Issues

The key priorities for the new government include restoring economic stability and improving the quality of life for citizens. Barnier has already assured that taxes for the middle class will not be raised, despite the growing national debt and budget deficit.

Immigration remains another sensitive issue. Barnier has expressed his intention to follow the European Migration Pact and focus on integration efforts. He also emphasized the importance of supporting businesses, farmers, and managing public finances.

In the coming days, the government is expected to present its 2025 budget plan, a crucial document for addressing the ongoing economic crisis.

Expectations

Despite political challenges, France is moving toward the formation of a new government, which is tasked with stabilizing the country and addressing pressing issues. Michel Barnier is striving to achieve consensus among various political factions while maintaining a balance between economic and social challenges.
