Introduction to the Demonstration

The Rheinmetall AG industrial group showcased its innovative self-propelled anti-aircraft artillery system, Skyranger 35, on the Leopard 1 tank chassis during the Skyranger System Demonstration 2024 event held on September 18 in Erprobungszentrum Ochsenboden, Canton of Schwyz, Switzerland. This was reported by zbiam. The event gathered representatives from defense ministries, armed forces, and the defense industry from 26 countries, although there was unfortunately no delegation from Poland.

Features and Characteristics of the System

The Skyranger 35 anti-aircraft system impresses with its innovative configuration based on the Leopard 1A5BE, enhancing its modern capabilities for air defense. It is equipped with a drone turret borrowed from the Oerlikon Revolver Gun Mk3, showcasing effectiveness in detecting and destroying aerial targets. The anti-aircraft installation is armed with a 30mm Oerlikon KDG automatic cannon, capable of firing up to a range of 4000 meters.

Technologies and Sensors

The system employs the Oerlikon AMMR radar system with four AESA antennas, providing 360° coverage. This technology enables the detection of even small drones. The turret is equipped with television and thermal imaging cameras, enhancing its functionality in various conditions, including at night and in adverse weather.

Implementation Prospects

The project is being realized not only for Ukraine but also for other potential recipients, reflecting the growing interest in the system from various countries. Rheinmetall AG plans to build 10 units to compensate for losses of the Cheetah system, destroyed during the war. This highlights its potential in a global context.

Conclusion from the Demonstration

Unfortunately, the demonstration on September 18 could not perform showcase firings due to a technical failure. However, after resolving the issues, the system successfully completed all planned tasks the following day. This underscores the reliability and potential of Skyranger 35 as an important element of modern air defense, capable of providing effective protection in challenging combat conditions.
