On Monday, the Biden administration announced a new initiative to ban Chinese software and hardware in Internet-connected vehicles in the United States, citing national security concerns. The move is aimed at preventing Chinese intelligence from using vehicle systems to track Americans or gain access to critical infrastructure, such as power grids, Reuters writes.

The new regulations would effectively block most Chinese cars from entering the US market and require major automakers to remove Chinese-made software and hardware from vehicles already in use within the country.

“We cannot wait until the threat becomes significant before we act,” Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo said, explaining that the restrictions are designed to prevent foreign adversaries from controlling or interfering with vehicles on American roads.

The proposed measures would also prevent Chinese-made self-driving cars from being tested on US roads and extend to software and hardware produced by other US adversaries, including Russia.

The decision is part of a broader US strategy to counter Chinese competition and protect American jobs, which also includes raising tariffs on Chinese goods, such as electric vehicles.
