In response to the escalation of the conflict in Lebanon and its consequences for the local population, the United States has announced the allocation of almost $157 million in humanitarian aid. According to US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, these funds will be used to meet the needs of internally displaced persons and refugees, as well as to support the communities that host them.
“The funding will help provide basic needs for those affected by the conflict, including food, shelter, hygiene kits and protective equipment.”
– Blinken said in a statement. According to him, the aid will also be addressed to those fleeing to neighbouring Syria.
According to the UN, the situation in the region remains critical: hundreds of thousands of people have been forced to flee their homes in recent weeks alone. As a result of Israel’s military actions, more than 100,000 people, mostly Lebanese and Syrians, have crossed the border into Syria in search of safety.
This humanitarian initiative is particularly relevant in the light of recent events: On 1 October, Israel announced the start of a ground operation in southern Lebanon, and on 4 October, it launched eleven strikes on southern Beirut, where the Hezbollah group’s positions are located.
In the face of an unprecedented humanitarian crisis, the support of the international community is crucial to ensure that the basic needs of those suffering from the effects of the conflict are met.
