According to the latest British intelligence, after capturing Vuhledar in Donetsk region, Russian troops are likely to try to advance towards Velyka Novosilka and Bohoyavlenka. These settlements are located on an important strategic route towards Zaporizhzhia, and their capture could significantly change the course of the fighting in eastern Ukraine.

On 1 October, the occupiers were able to take control of Vuhledar as a result of intensified offensive actions. The city, which is of great tactical importance due to its location on a hill, had long been under the close protection of Ukrainian forces. However, after being almost completely surrounded, the Ukrainian Defence Forces were forced to retreat.

British intelligence reports that the Russian offensive, which has been going on for several weeks now, may be aimed at further advancing westwards. “In the west, one of the likely targets is Velyka Novosilka towards Zaporizhzhia on the T0509. Bohoyavlenka is 8 km to the north,” the UK Ministry of Defence said.

These developments are worrying not only because of the threat of military escalation, but also because of the possible humanitarian consequences for local residents. Already, Ukrainian troops are facing outnumbered Russian forces, which threatens their position in the region.

It is hoped that the Ukrainian military will be able to respond to new challenges and resist the invaders’ advance. The events in and around Vuhledar continue to be in the spotlight as the situation may change before our eyes.
