A memorial stone in honour of Azovstal’s prisoners of war who died in Olenivka is to be installed in Holosiivskyi Park, on the Viburnum Alley, by the end of the year. This was reported by the Kyiv City Council.
Olesia Pynzenyk, a member of the Kyiv City Council, stressed that on the night of 29 July 2022, one of the barracks of the penal colony in Russian-occupied Olenivka was destroyed by an explosion. The tragedy killed at least 54 Ukrainian prisoners of war who fought for Ukraine’s freedom during the defence of Mariupol at the Azovstal plant.
“We laid the Viburnum Alley of Remembrance last year as a symbol of honour and eternal memory of the fallen Heroes. For many families, this is the only place where they can honour their fallen fathers and sons. Heroes are alive as long as their memory lives on,” said Olesya Pynzenyk.
Last week, with the support of the families of the victims, a flagpole was installed in the park and the flag of the Olenivka Community was raised. An important step will be the installation of a memorial stone with the names of the victims, which, according to preliminary data, includes 54 Ukrainian soldiers, but according to eyewitnesses, the number of victims may be higher.
According to the information available to date, Russia deliberately organised the mass murder of Ukrainian prisoners in order to discredit Ukraine in the international arena and to prevent the supply of Western weapons.
