Information on the participation of the North Korean military in the war in Ukraine

The South Korean Ministry of Defence has reported that the DPRK has sent its military to Ukraine. The information was shared by Andriy Kovalenko, head of the Centre for Countering Disinformation at the National Security and Defence Council, who shared this information on his Telegram channel.

North Korean military personnel, mostly engineers, are known to have arrived in Ukraine in limited numbers. Their main role is to oversee the quality and use of weapons supplied from Pyongyang to the Russian army. These soldiers have already reported some deaths in the line of duty.

Criticism of the quality of the DPRK’s weapons

In addition to surveillance, the North Korean military reports on the quality of KN-23 ammunition and ballistic missiles, which have been found to have mostly poor performance. This information is undoubtedly of concern to Kim Jong-un, who probably expects his weapons to be used successfully in war.

Thus, the DPRK’s involvement in the hostilities in Ukraine confirms the growing level of cooperation between Pyongyang and Moscow, which could have serious security implications in the region. The unfolding events demonstrate how the conflict in Ukraine is becoming an arena for the influence of international actors, including countries with a relatively unstable situation, such as the DPRK.
