The volume of freight transported by rail in Ukraine in January-September 2024 was a record for the entire period of wartime. In nine months, Ukrzaliznytsia transported 131.88 million tonnes of cargo, up 23.3% year-on-year. This was announced by Valery Tkachev, deputy director of the company’s commercial department, on his Facebook page.
In September 2024, the volume of rail freight totalled 13.84 million tonnes, up 14.9% compared to September 2023. Tkachev stressed that these figures are the highest since the beginning of the war.
A significant increase was observed in export traffic: in the first nine months of 2024, this figure increased by 66.4%, reaching 63.92 million tonnes. This jump is attributed to the successful operation of the Ukrainian export corridor through the ports of Greater Odesa and the national economic recovery.
The main commodities transported in September were iron and manganese ore (2.36 million tonnes, 38.2% of total exports) and grain cargo (2.29 million tonnes, 37.0%). Ferrous metals were transported at 0.494 million tonnes (8.0%).
In addition, in September, the company reached a record high of 174,000 tonnes of cement transported. Since the beginning of the year, more than 25.7 million tonnes of grain have been exported.
