South Korea has issued a strong warning to North Korea, saying that the Kim Jong Un regime will see its end if it harms its people. The statement came on Sunday after North Korea threatened a “terrible catastrophe” in response to alleged drone flights over Pyongyang. This was reported by Yonhap News Agency.

North Korea’s provocative threats

In its statement, the South Korean Ministry of Defence noted that the comments of Kim Yo-jong, the sister of the North Korean leader, only confirm the hypocrisy of the regime, which continues to provoke and use vulgar tactics such as launching balloons filled with garbage.

“We clearly warn that if North Korea harms the security of our people, it will lead to the end of the North Korean regime,” the ministry said in a statement distributed to journalists.

Kim Jong-un’s threats

Kim Jong-un, in turn, said that the North is ready to take “appropriate decisive action in response” if drones with materials targeting Pyongyang reappear in the skies over the capital. He warned that the “time for an attack” could come at any time, and that it would lead to a “terrible catastrophe”.

Mutual accusations

In response to this situation, South Korea’s Ministry of Defence accused the North of shifting the blame to South Korean activists who send leaflets against Pyongyang. The ministry stressed that this was an attempt to compensate for the “continuing failure” in domestic policy, particularly in security issues and the launch of military reconnaissance satellites.

“The North Korean authorities should stop the shameful launching of garbage balloons, not worry about ‘drone postcards’ that cannot be identified,” the statement said.

Propaganda and hostility

At the same time, North Korea’s state-run newspaper, Rodong Sinmun, published information about the population’s “discontent” with the alleged drone flight, stressing that “millions of people are seething with rage” and craving “ruthless revenge”.

This scenario can be viewed as a propaganda manoeuvre by the regime, which is trying to justify its hostile policy towards South Korea by defining both countries as enemies of each other. These actions of the DPRK look like an attempt to strengthen domestic support and divert attention from its own problems.

This escalation of tensions between South and North Korea underscores the complexity of the security challenges in the region. South Korea, demonstrating resolve, emphasises the need for stability and peace, while North Korea continues its aggressive rhetoric. The situation requires close attention from the international community, as further provocations could have serious consequences not only for both countries but also for the entire region.
