The United States is demonstrating its unwavering commitment to protecting Israel from external threats, in particular from Iran, through the deployment of the THAAD missile defence system. Pentagon spokesperson Major General Pat Ryder confirmed that the first components of this advanced defence technology have already arrived in Israel, along with the US military experts responsible for its operation. In the coming days, additional military personnel are expected to arrive to ensure the full operational readiness of the complex, as reported by Israel’s Channel 9.

What is THAAD and why is it important?

THAAD (Terminal High Altitude Area Defence) is one of the most advanced missile defence systems in the world, capable of intercepting and destroying ballistic missiles at long distances (up to 200 km) and altitudes (up to 150 km). The system uses kinetic interception, which means that the interceptor missile physically collides with the target, making it extremely effective against high-speed threats.

One of the key components of THAAD is the AN/TPY-2 radar, which can detect targets up to 2,000 km away, operating in a sector of about 120 degrees. This allows the system to receive information about threats not only from its radars, but also through integrated data exchange systems, such as satellites. Such coordination increases the effectiveness of defence against potential attacks.

Strategic importance for Israel

The deployment of THAAD in Israel is an important step towards strengthening the country’s defence capabilities amid growing tensions in the region. In particular, it is a response to the recent attacks by Iran on 13 April and 1 October this year. These actions confirm the threat of ballistic missile attacks on Israel, and THAAD will be an additional protective layer to the existing air defence system.

Political signal and regional stability

The deployment of THAAD in Israel is not only a military operation, but also a powerful political signal. Washington is thus emphasising its support for its ally in the Middle East. In addition, it is another element of the US global strategy to counter Iranian influence and ensure security at the regional level.

This decision may also affect the balance of power in the region, as Israel’s strengthened defence capabilities force other countries to reconsider their approaches to security. Despite the fact that the Pentagon does not disclose the exact timing of the battery’s full readiness, the fact of its deployment is already significant for the geopolitics of the region.

The arrival of the US THAAD system in Israel is a clear demonstration of the strengthening of the defence alliance between the two countries. Against the backdrop of escalating threats from Iran, this step strengthens both Israel’s military and political position. At the same time, it strengthens the role of the United States as a key guarantor of security in the Middle East, contributing to regional stability.
