On 22-24 October, the Russian city of Kazan will host one of the most important international summits of the year – the BRICS Leaders’ Meeting. The event, which is attracting worldwide attention, will bring together the leaders of China, India and other member countries to discuss the strengthening of the role of the Global South and strategies for promoting peace and stability in the international arena.

According to the official reports of the Chinese and Indian Foreign Ministries, the leaders of these countries, Xi Jinping and Narendra Modi, have confirmed their participation in the summit. The meeting, which will bring together not only the BRICS members but also new participants, including Saudi Arabia, Iran and Egypt, promises to be an important milestone for future global cooperation.

Focus on the Global South

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said that Xi Jinping plans to have a “deep exchange of views” with the BRICS leaders at the summit. The topics of discussion will include the current international situation, further development of BRICS mechanisms, and practical steps to strengthen the position of the Global South, a group of countries that seek to balance the influence of developed countries on the world stage. Speaking at the briefing, Mao Ning stressed that China is ready to deepen cooperation with its BRICS partners to achieve common goals of peace and stability in the world.

Dynamics of cooperation

Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister of India, is also committed to constructive dialogue. The Indian Foreign Ministry has confirmed that Modi will attend the 16th BRICS summit to assess the progress made on initiatives previously proposed by the organisation. India, like China, plays a key role in the development of this multilateral format focused on economic development and cooperation between developing countries.

One of the important aspects of the upcoming summit will be the bilateral meetings that Xi Jinping and Narendra Modi are planning to hold with other BRICS leaders, including Russian President Vladimir Putin. These talks are expected to have a significant impact on regional politics and international relations.

New horizons for the BRICS

Since its formation in 2006, with Brazil, Russia, India and China, the BRICS has gradually become one of the key platforms for global cooperation. In 2011, South Africa joined the group. This year, the initiative has undergone a new transformation: five more countries – Egypt, Iran, the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Ethiopia – have joined the BRICS, which demonstrates the growing importance of the organisation.

The strengthening of the Global South, which has been repeatedly stated by the BRICS members, is aimed at creating an alternative model of the international order, in which more attention will be paid to the interests of developing countries. This issue is of particular importance against the backdrop of geopolitical challenges and economic sanctions that threaten global stability.

The Kazan Summit could be a turning point for the BRICS and the entire Global South. The leaders of China and India, together with their partners in the organisation, are seeking to strengthen the economic and political weight of countries that seek independent foreign policies and seek to redistribute influence in global governance. The meeting in Russia could become a platform for further decisive steps in this direction, laying the groundwork for a new era of international cooperation.
