An outbreak of avian influenza has been reported in the Kyiv region, prompting the city authorities to strengthen security measures. In this regard, Kyiv has announced increased control over the circulation of poultry products. This decision was made at a meeting of the State Emergency Anti-Epizootic Commission at the Kyiv City State Administration (KCSA) to prevent the spread of the virus and protect city residents and poultry. This was reported by life.kyiv.ua.

A case of bird flu in Bila Tserkva district

According to the State Service of Ukraine for Food Safety and Consumer Protection, cases of avian influenza were detected in the village of Mala Skvyryka, which belongs to the Fursivska community in Bila Tserkva district, Kyiv region. Four swans found on the Skvyryka River were confirmed to have the RNA of the H5N1 subtype A influenza virus. This form of the virus is dangerous not only for birds but also for humans.

What is bird flu?

Avian influenza is a highly contagious viral disease that affects the respiratory and digestive systems of birds. The H5N1 virus is a particular threat, as it can cause high mortality in birds and even humans. The main carrier of this virus is wild migratory birds, in particular waterfowl such as ducks, gulls and swans. Although many of them can carry the virus without showing signs of illness, it is very dangerous for poultry and people who come into contact with infected animals or their excreta.

How is the virus transmitted to humans?

Avian influenza is transmitted to humans primarily through direct contact with infected birds or their excreta, for example, at live poultry markets or private households. Although no cases of human-to-human transmission have been reported to date, the risk of infection remains high due to poor hygiene practices.

Precautionary measures in Kyiv

In response to the threat of avian influenza, the Kyiv authorities are stepping up controls over the circulation of poultry products. Particular attention is being paid to live poultry markets and poultry farms. The State Commission under the Kyiv City State Administration has also decided to conduct regular inspections and strengthen sanitary standards at poultry sales and rearing facilities.

Residents of the city are advised to avoid contact with wild birds and to be cautious when purchasing poultry products. If you notice unusual behaviour in birds or find dead birds, contact the relevant authorities immediately.

The situation with bird flu in the Kyiv region requires increased attention from both the authorities and residents of the capital. Following simple precautions will help prevent the spread of the dangerous infection and protect the health of people and birds.
