U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said that next week the Department will announce new sanctions aimed at third countries that support Russia in its aggression against Ukraine. This was discussed during a press conference held on 22 October, according to information provided by TimeUkraineIsrael with reference to Eurointegration.
Yellen stressed that the upcoming sanctions target “those who facilitate the Kremlin’s war machine, including intermediaries in third countries that supply Russia with critical resources for its military”. Although the details of the new measures were not disclosed, this statement indicates the US intention to significantly increase pressure on Russia.
It is worth noting that since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the United States has already imposed a number of tough sanctions aimed at limiting Russia’s financing and industrial potential. Recently, Washington has been focusing on closing loopholes that allow Moscow to circumvent existing restrictions.
In addition, a bipartisan coalition in the US Congress recently called on the Biden administration to strengthen sanctions against Russia’s oilfield services industry, indicating growing concern about the effectiveness of existing measures.
