German prosecutors have filed murder charges against a Russian citizen suspected of a deadly attack on two Ukrainian soldiers who were undergoing medical treatment in Germany. The incident took place in April this year in the city of Murnau am See, located in southern Bavaria, Reuters reports.

According to police, two Ukrainian soldiers were found with multiple stab wounds near the shopping centre. One of them, a 36-year-old man, died at the scene, while the other, aged 23, died of his injuries in hospital.

Shortly after the attack, the 57-year-old Russian citizen was arrested at his home. He currently remains in custody in Munich, prosecutors said.

According to the case file, the defendant was an ardent supporter of Russia’s war against Ukraine because of his nationalist beliefs. He knew that Ukrainian soldiers were serving during the war and had met them before the incident. The incident occurred during a joint drinking session, when a dispute over the situation in Ukraine escalated, leading to violent aggression on the part of the suspect.

Currently, the regional court in Munich has to decide whether to open the main trial, prosecutors say.
