Iran plans to increase its military budget by 200%

Iran has announced its intention to triple its military budget, increasing it by about 200 per cent. The announcement was made on Tuesday by government spokesman Fatemeh Mohajerani in Tehran’s state media. The decision comes amid rising tensions between Iran and Israel, which have repeatedly attacked each other this year.

The planned increase in the defence budget is part of the budget proposal submitted by the government to parliament. Mohajerani noted that there was a significant increase in defence funding, but did not provide further details.

In recent months, Iran and Israel have conducted air strikes against each other, with Israel recently striking Iran in response to a rocket attack on 1 October. According to Israeli sources, most of the missiles were destroyed by their air defence system.

On Monday, Tehran said it would “use all available tools” to respond to the Israeli attack on military targets in Iran. Iran actively supports the militant group Hezbollah, which is engaged in a fierce struggle with Israeli forces in Lebanon, as well as the Palestinian group Hamas, which is fighting against Israel in the Gaza Strip.
