In a letter sent to the UN Secretary-General and the Security Council, Iraq strongly condemned Israel’s actions, pointing out that on 26 October, Israeli aircraft violated its airspace to conduct military operations against Iran. “This is a serious violation that cannot go unanswered,” said Iraqi government spokesman Basim Alawi, DW reports.
Iraq also plans to turn to its American partners, who are allies of Israel, to discuss this incident. This situation has arisen against the backdrop of escalating regional tensions caused by conflicts between Israel and Palestinian groups such as Hamas in the Gaza Strip and Hezbollah in Lebanon.
Iran’s military has already accused Israel of using Iraqi airspace to launch long-range missiles. Iraq, which has close ties with Tehran, is trying to maintain a balance between US and Iranian influence, as pro-Iranian militias operate in the country and express aggressive rhetoric against the US and Israel.
One such group, the Hezbollah Brigades, called the use of Iraqi airspace a “dangerous precedent” and said that Israel “must pay a price” for its actions. These threats underscore the complex political situation in the region, in which Iraq is trying to avoid being drawn into new conflicts.
Thus, the situation in Iraq remains tense, and any further escalation could have serious consequences for the stability of the region.
