A report by the IDF, the Israeli Defence Forces, reports a new peak in tensions in the conflict with Hezbollah. Over the past 24 hours, approximately 60 rockets were fired from Lebanon into Israel. These actions took place at a time when Israel is conducting a ground operation against Hezbollah in southern Lebanon and continues aerial bombardment.
The consequences of the conflict for Lebanon have already been tragic – according to official figures, more than 2,600 people have been killed, including Hezbollah leaders, and more than a million people have been forced to flee their homes and become refugees. At the same time, Hezbollah continues to conduct ground combat and rocket attacks on Israeli territory.
The main goal of Israel’s military campaign is to create safe conditions for the return of 60,000 residents of northern Israel who were evacuated as a result of rocket attacks initiated by Hezbollah a year ago in support of Hamas.
International observers and human rights organisations express deep concern over the escalation of violence and call on both sides to de-escalate and resume negotiations, stressing the importance of protecting civilians in armed conflict.
