October 2024 was another tragic month for Israel, as fighting, terrorist attacks and rocket attacks claimed the lives of 88 people, both soldiers and civilians. This is the highest number of casualties since last October, when nearly 1,400 people were killed in an attack on 7 October. Following the tragedy, Israel launched Operation Iron Swords, which continues to this day, TimeUkraineIsrael reports, citing Vesty.
Operation Northern Swords: losses in Lebanon
Only a month ago, the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) launched an offensive in Lebanon as part of Operation Northern Swords. In October, 37 Israeli soldiers – both regular and reserve soldiers – were killed in the region. The confrontation in Lebanon has not subsided, and the risks to the military remain extremely high.
Gaza Strip: fighting and the tragedy of prisoners
Although the focus of operations has shifted to Lebanon, fighting in the Gaza Strip has not stopped. In October, 19 Israeli soldiers were killed there, and another was killed in a military incident near the border. In addition, it became known that Idan Shtivi, who went missing on 7 October 2023, was killed. His body, as well as the remains of more than 100 other prisoners, are still being held in Gaza.
Terrorist attacks inside the country
October was a month of numerous terrorist attacks that killed nine civilians, including two police officers. One of the worst was the attack in Jaffa, where seven people were killed. These attacks continue to spread fear among Israelis, as they often occur in areas where civilians are gathered.
Missile attacks and drone attacks: increasing casualties
Frequent rocket attacks and drone attacks caused Israel heavy losses. Over the course of the month, 13 people were killed, including seven on the last day of October during attacks near Metula and Krayot. Six soldiers were killed by drone strikes, including four recruits from the Golani Brigade.
