An unusual aircraft carrier has been spotted at the Chinese shipyard Guangzhou Shipyard International on Longxue Island in Guangdong province. Satellite images obtained by Planet Labs show a flat-bottomed ship with an open deck, which differs from the traditional warships currently in service with the Chinese Navy, CNN reports.
Experts point to the unusual shape and size of the ship – it is much smaller than Chinese aircraft carriers such as the Shandong or Liaoning, or even the Type 075 amphibious assault ships. Thomas Sugart, a former US Navy submarine commander and expert at the Centre for a New American Security, suggests that the new ship may be the world’s first civilian aircraft carrier to specialise in oceanographic research missions.
China continues to build up its navy at a record pace. Its newest aircraft carrier, the 80,000-strong Fujian, is already undergoing sea trials and could join the People’s Liberation Army Navy fleet by 2026. Equipped with powerful technology, this supercarrier is second only to its American counterparts and far superior to the Shandong and Liaoning. In addition, according to the Centre for Strategic and International Studies, China is completing the construction of the world’s largest amphibious assault ship, the Type 076.
Experts see the construction of this potential aircraft carrier as a sign of Beijing’s strategic plan for civil-military merger, which creates dual-use ships. Given the lightweight design of the new vessel, it could serve as a platform for helicopters or drones, potentially strengthening China’s coast guard, which is increasingly acting as a quasi-military force.
Thus, this new aircraft carrier could be another step in strengthening Beijing’s maritime power, expanding its ability to defend national interests not only within its borders but also in international waters.
