On the evening of Sunday, 5 November, an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.2 was recorded in northern Greece, the AP news agency reports . The tremors occurred near the Halkidiki peninsula, about 40 km southeast of the country’s second largest city, Thessaloniki, according to the Institute of Geodynamics of Athens.
According to the Institute, the earthquake occurred at 19:03 local time (17:03 GMT) at a depth of 15.9 km. A few minutes later, at 19:07, another shock with a magnitude of 4.2 was recorded, as well as a number of less significant seismic activities.
Costas Papazachos, Professor of Applied Geophysics and Seismology at the University of Thessaloniki, said that the region is currently showing “moderate seismic activity” and the likelihood of a stronger earthquake in the area is low.
The earthquake was felt over a large area of northern Greece, but police and fire officials reported that no damage or injuries have been reported so far. The day before, on Saturday, a less powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 3.9 also occurred in the same area.
