The North Atlantic Alliance is ready to cooperate with the winner of the US presidential election, regardless of who it is, and will do everything possible to maintain unity. This was stated by NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte during a joint press conference with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in Berlin, France Presse reports.
“We will work with both Kamala Harris and Donald Trump and ensure that the Alliance remains united,” Rutte stressed. According to him, this unity is in the interests of both European countries and the United States. Rutte, who took over from Norwegian Jens Stoltenberg just a month ago, stressed that the United States will remain deeply involved in NATO.
“The American leadership is well aware that if Putin succeeds in Ukraine, Russia, emboldened by this, will become a direct threat to NATO’s eastern flank,” Rutte said. This, in his opinion, is what motivates the United States to support Ukraine and take an active part in the affairs of the Alliance.
Rütte: personal experience with candidates is an important advantage
At the start of his mandate, which began on 1 October, Rutte, a former Dutch prime minister of 14 years, said he had no serious concerns about the outcome of the US election. “I know both candidates well. We worked with Donald Trump for four years, and this experience allows me to be confident in our ability to maintain cooperation with any president,” he added.
