As Donald Trump rapidly approaches victory in the 2024 US presidential election, Ukraine, which is critically dependent on US military assistance in the war with Russia, is beginning to hear the first reactions to a possible change in the White House.
“The Republicans seem to be taking everything – the White House, the Senate and the House of Representatives. What does this mean for us? It means high risks, but also high hopes. We have to succeed. And we need to make sure that the next generations of Ukrainians can go to bed on Tuesday night in November, because their fate will be in their hands,” MP Oleksiy Honcharenko wrote on his Telegram channel, stressing the importance of Ukraine’s resilience in the face of possible changes in external support.
Meanwhile, the Ukrainian media have been restrained in reporting on the US election, analysing the potential impact of Trump’s victory on future relations between Kyiv and Washington. Although the Republican Party generally advocates for a reduction in foreign aid, Ukrainian diplomats and politicians hope that cooperation will remain at a high level.
Election results: Trump is only 4 votes away from victory
As of Wednesday morning, all polling stations in the US are closed and the vote count shows Trump’s advantage, according to US media. To win, each candidate needs at least 270 electoral votes. According to Fox News, Trump’s victory in the key state of Pennsylvania leaves him with only 4 votes to secure the final victory. Other leading US media outlets have so far refrained from making final predictions.
For Kyiv, Trump’s possible success is a new political reality that could lead to a rethinking of approaches to cooperation with American partners.
