Italian President sharply responds to Elon Musk’s criticism of judges

Президент Італії Серджіо Маттарелла

Italian President Sergio Mattarella has reacted sharply to the statements of billionaire Elon Musk, who spoke extremely negatively about the judges who ruled in a case related to the migration policy of the government of Georgia Meloni. In his comment, Mattarella stressed that Italy is a democratic country capable of making its own decisions in accordance with the Constitution and called on Musk to “refrain from giving advice” to foreign governments, The Economist Time reports .

The dispute was triggered by Musk’s criticism of Roman judges who did not allow migrants to be detained in Italy and referred the case to the European Court of Justice. The billionaire, who has shown clear support for government initiatives, called these judges “should resign”. Known for his proximity to political forces supporting Meloni and Matteo Salvini, Musk continued his criticism on his X platform, asking: “Do people in Italy live in a democracy or is it an unelected autocracy?”

Responding to these attacks, Mattarella, who has a moral rather than political role in the country, said: “Italy is a great democratic country that can manage its own affairs, respecting its own Constitution.” He also added that anyone who is going to hold an important position in the government of another country, respecting its sovereignty, cannot afford to teach political lessons to others.

This is not the first time that Musk has interfered in the internal affairs of other states. In particular, his close relationship with right-wing political leaders in Europe continues to cause debate and controversy in international circles.
