As a successful businessman, US President-elect Donald Trump cannot afford to ignore the interests of American taxpayers, as the United States has already invested huge sums in Ukraine’s defence. Poland believes that Trump will not allow Russia to destroy Ukraine.
This was stated by Polish President Andrzej Duda during a press conference in Warsaw with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.
Duda noted that he could not say for sure what policy towards Ukraine Donald Trump would pursue, as he had not yet taken office and had not announced his plans. However, given his previous experience and communication with him in April this year, the Polish leader emphasised: Trump is “a successful person, a born fighter who likes to fight and does not like to lose”. According to Duda, Trump demonstrated his determination during the last US election.
“Trump always respects the money of American taxpayers, and we mean how much the US has already spent to help Ukraine – huge amounts of money in the form of equipment and finance to support Ukrainian defenders. That is why I am confident that Trump will not allow Russia to destroy Ukraine. This is not only a matter of politics, but also of respect for the money of the Americans,” Duda stressed.
The Polish president also noted that Poland, due to its geographical proximity to the war zone, is actively monitoring the situation and plans to discuss Ukraine with Trump during their meeting.
“I am calm about President Trump’s political decisions and have no doubt that they will be wise,” Duda added.
The Polish leader’s confidence underscores that, despite uncertainty about Trump’s exact political steps after his inauguration, Poland remains optimistic about further US decisions in the context of the war in Ukraine.
