Kryvyi Rih is saying goodbye to 32-year-old Olena Kulyk and her three children, who were killed in a rocket attack by Russian aggressors on 11 November. The farewell ceremony is taking place today, 14 November, in the city, where relatives, friends and residents are paying tribute to the family who fell victim to a ruthless war. Funeral procession and symbolic last call for Kirill
The funeral procession that accompanied the family on their final journey passed by the gymnasium where 10-year-old Kirill Kulik studied. As a symbolic gesture, the last bell rang at the school for him. Kirill was a bright and kind boy whose life was cut short by a missile strike. His younger brothers, 2-year-old Demid and 2-month-old Ulyana, as well as his mother Olena, were killed in the powerful shelling.

The rocket explosion and the father’s heroic survival
On 11 November, a Russian missile hit the Kulyk family’s apartment, destroying the entire entrance of the building. The explosion trapped the family under the rubble, and search and rescue operations lasted more than 20 hours. The bodies of the mother and three children were found under the rubble. The only survivor of this terrible attack was 33-year-old Maksym Kulyk, the father of the family. At the time of the shelling, he was in the kitchen preparing breakfast, and the blast wave threw him to the lower floor of the house, which led to his rescue.
Maksym is currently in hospital, but his life is not in danger. The family did not want to leave their hometown, despite the constant threat of shelling by the occupiers, because Kryvyi Rih remained their home, which they loved and did not want to leave.

Commemorating and supporting the community
People continue to bring flowers and toys to the site of the tragedy, near the playground. These are symbols of pain and compassion that the people of Kryvyi Rih use to honour the memory of the innocent children and mother. The family were innocent victims of a war that took their lives and brought destruction to their home.
Consequences of the shelling for the city
A rocket attack by Russian terrorists killed four people in Kryvyi Rih. In addition to the Kulyk family, 14 other people, including two children, were injured in the attack. Fortunately, their lives are not currently in danger.
Family loyalty and the aggressor’s ruthlessness
This tragic case is yet another horrific chapter in the war that Russia is waging against Ukrainian civilians. The Kulyk family has become an example for many, showing unbreakable strength of spirit, even in the most terrible moments. Their memory will live forever in the hearts of those who loved and honoured them.
