Russia, which holds the position of the world’s largest supplier of enriched uranium, has announced temporary restrictions on its exports to the United States. This was in response to Washington’s decision to ban imports of Russian uranium. This was reported by Reuters.

Russia reportedly controls about 44% of the world’s uranium enrichment capacity. Prior to the embargo signed by US President Joe Biden in May, Russia accounted for approximately 35% of nuclear fuel imports to the United States.

The US law banning imports of enriched uranium from Russia allows for exceptions in case of shortages of supplies from other sources. However, the new Russian restrictions make it much more difficult to implement such exceptions, putting additional pressure on the US energy industry.

The decision on temporary export restrictions was signed by Russian President Vladimir Putin. At the same time, the Russian government clarifies that the document contains certain exceptions, the details of which are not disclosed.

The move is another step in the escalation of the economic confrontation between the two countries, which is gaining momentum amid the ongoing war in Ukraine and tighter international sanctions against Russia.
