On Saturday, 16 November, a brazen hijacking of a MADA ambulance from the Hadassah Ein Kerem hospital in Jerusalem took place. The incident, which resulted in a large-scale police operation, raised a wave of discussion about security and the need to strengthen security measures in medical institutions.
According to TimeUkraineIsrael , citing Cursorinfo, the hijacker, a 20-year-old resident of a settlement near Jerusalem, pushed a medical service worker, taking possession of the ambulance. The police responded quickly to the incident: a chase with roadblocks was organised, and soon the police managed to locate the vehicle on Highway 1. The police demanded a stop, but the hijacker continued driving and even collided with a police car.
Pursuit and arrest of the hijacker
The chase lasted for several minutes until the hijacker left the car and tried to escape on foot. The police quickly detained the offender and brought him to the police station for further investigation. The police car was slightly damaged during the chase, but no one was seriously injured.
Increase in the number of incidents of vehicle theft
It is worth noting that cases of vehicle hijackings, especially those of ambulances, have increased significantly. Earlier, police detained a 17-year-old Palestinian Arab from Ramallah who stole a car in Holon and drove through the security barrier near Ben Gurion Airport, endangering security personnel and other drivers. A car was also reported stolen from a petrol station in Lod by Saad Abu Raqeika, a resident of the Negev. According to statistics, about 95 per cent of stolen cars end up in the Palestinian Authority, which increases the concern of law enforcement officials.
Such incidents demonstrate the urgent need to strengthen security measures to prevent such incidents that pose a threat to citizens.
