The US Secret Service is expanding its arsenal of technologies by using Spot robotic dogs created by Boston Dynamics to protect key facilities, including Donald Trump’s residence in Mar-a-Lago. The unique device has recently been spotted patrolling the resort’s perimeter, the BBC reports.

Spot’s technological capabilities and features

Spot, which costs up to $75,000, is capable of performing complex tasks:

  • navigate in tight spaces,
  • go up and down stairs,
  • open the door.

The robot is equipped with cameras to create 3D maps and thermal sensors to detect potential threats. At the same time, it works under the guidance of an operator who controls the device with a joystick.

“These robots have advanced sensors that are ideal for defensive operations,” said Anthony Guglielmi, a representative of the US Secret Service.

The Secret Service is actively considering Spot as part of the solution to security challenges in large areas such as Mar-a-Lago, where a significant amount of property is on display. Former Secret Service agent Ron Williams noted that robotic dogs can patrol the area more effectively than humans and may become a common part of security measures in the future.

A video from Spot that went viral on TikTok has received mixed reviews, ranging from admiration to fear. Some users call it “creepy”, while others admire its capabilities.

The signs on the feet of the device warn: “Do not pet!”. Political analysts have already made a joke about this, noting that Spot is more likely to cause anxiety than a desire to touch.

Safety comes first

According to Guglielmi, the top priority remains protecting the president-elect. In 2023, there were at least two assassination attempts on Trump. The use of Spot is another step in ensuring security in the face of growing threats.

Spot continues to demonstrate how innovation is changing the way we approach the protection of high-profile individuals and key facilities, providing not only a physical but also a psychological advantage.
