Senior officials of terrorist organisations in Israeli prisons are threatening to start a full-scale confrontation behind bars. The statements were addressed to the Israeli Prison Service Commissioner Kobi Yaacobi. This was reported by the Time Ukraine Israel portal with reference to Cursorinfo.
During a speech at a meeting of the Knesset National Security Committee, Yaacobi said that the imprisoned Hamas leader said:
“You will end the war outside, and we will start it in prison.”
An equally aggressive statement was made by a representative of another terrorist organisation, Fatah, who said:
“We’re going to celebrate our Independence Day in prison.”
These words were an alarming signal to the Israeli authorities. Kobi Yaacobi stressed that he was preparing himself and his team for any eventuality:
“These threats do not give me peace of mind. We are looking for resources and taking all the necessary measures to ensure our safety.”
New head of the prison service
In May 2024, Yaacobi will officially assume the post of head of the Israel Prison Service. His appointment has already been approved by the government.
Jaakobi, 50, is an experienced officer with many years of service. He started his career in the police 26 years ago in the special patrol unit YASAM after serving in the Golani Brigade. He subsequently held a number of key command positions, including adviser to the director of the Ministry of Public Security and head of the traffic department.
In August 2021, he received the Police Medal for Distinguished Service. He risked his life to lead a rescue operation during a massive fire in the Jerusalem Mountains that threatened Eitanim Hospital.
Israel’s reaction
Threats emanating from prisons are forcing the Israeli authorities to reconsider their approach to security. These incidents once again demonstrate that terrorist organisations are not limited to activities outside the country, but are also active behind bars, using this environment to coordinate their actions.
The Israel Prison Service continues to implement new security measures to counter any potential threats.
