The Ukrainian Cybercorps of the Defence Intelligence of Ukraine has dealt a powerful blow to the Russian MTS Bank. The large-scale cyberattack, organised by the DIU’s specialists, disrupted key banking services, causing real chaos among users in Russia.

According to Time Ukraine Israel, citing RBC-Ukraine, the consequences of the attack were felt from the first hours. The bank’s Russian clients have been complaining about the complete inoperability of the mobile application, interruptions in online banking and the inability to perform basic financial transactions.

How the attack affected Russian clients

MTS Bank users report serious problems:

  • inability to transfer funds or withdraw cash;
  • lack of access to the mobile application;
  • interruptions in account replenishment and payment for services.

Business customers also suffered serious losses due to the malfunction of the MTS Business service. In many cases, companies have been unable to make or receive payments, which has put their business operations at risk. In addition, customers have reported unauthorised debiting of funds from their bank accounts.

Despite the obvious signs of an attack, MTS Bank representatives avoid commenting on the external influence. Bank support deletes negative customer reviews and tries to hide the extent of the problem.

A systemic blow to the financial system of the Russian Federation

This operation is part of the GRU’s broader strategy to weaken Russia’s financial institutions. In November, Ukrainian hackers attacked banks in the temporarily occupied Crimea, blocking their operations.

Earlier, in September, Rosselkhozbank and Moscow Credit Bank were attacked. As a result, their websites and services were taken offline, causing panic among customers.

Ukraine continues to use cyberweapons as an effective tool in its fight against the aggressor, weakening not only its economic resources but also its ability to maintain the stability of financial transactions.
