Ukraine has begun to actively use long-range weapons systems provided by its Western partners, allowing it to carry out more comprehensive and effective strikes against Russia’s rear. This conclusion was made by analysts at the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) after a series of strikes on 19-20 November.
According to ISW, the Ukrainian Armed Forces have used long-range strike drones and Storm Shadow missiles in recent operations. These strikes were aimed at various military targets in Russia’s rear, creating a tactical and operational advantage.
Ukraine already has systems such as the F-16, HIMARS, ATACMS, as well as air and sea drones in its arsenal. However, restrictions imposed by the West on the use of some of these weapons hinder the full realisation of their potential.
ISW analysts emphasise that the addition of systems such as JASSM, additional ATACMS, Storm Shadow and SCALP to Ukraine’s arsenal is critical to strengthening Ukraine’s ability to deliver accurate and powerful strikes deep behind enemy lines.
“This will allow Ukraine to create more effective strike packages that will have a tactical and strategic impact on the battlefield,” the report says.
At the same time, Ukraine should also develop domestic production and innovation to ensure continuity of strikes against Russia’s strategic targets.
A significant breakthrough was the decision of the US President Joe Biden’s administration to allow the use of long-range ATACMS missiles for strikes on Russian territory for the first time. This expanded Ukraine’s capabilities in countering the aggressor, although some Western restrictions on the use of the provided weapons remain in place.
Western assistance in the form of modern long-range weapons systems is becoming a decisive factor in changing the course of the war. The integration of these systems will allow Ukraine to increase the efficiency of its operations, reduce enemy resources and strengthen its position on the battlefield.
Further strengthening of military support is key to achieving success in the fight against Russian aggression and restoring Ukraine’s sovereignty.
