The number of German residents in favour of military support for Ukraine continues to grow, according to the results of an annual Bundeswehr poll reported by Spiegel.
Growing support
This year, 49 per cent of respondents were in favour of providing military assistance to Kyiv, up 4 per cent from 2023. Support is significantly higher among those who consider Russia a threat to Germany’s security.
65% of respondents see Russia’s actions in Ukraine and its rearmament as a serious threat to their country.
Political division
Significant support for military assistance is observed among the electorate of the leading parties. In contrast, supporters of the far-right Alternative for Germany, the new left-wing Alliance of Sarah Wagenknecht, and apolitical citizens mostly reject the idea of supporting Ukraine.
Dynamics of attitude
The survey results confirm a gradual increase in support for military assistance to Ukraine among Germans. In April 2024, the number of such citizens was 42%, while in February of the same year it was only 33%.
About the survey
The survey has been conducted annually by the Bundeswehr since 1996 to measure social perceptions of the armed forces. Around 2,000 citizens took part in this year’s survey.
German society is showing a gradual shift in sentiment towards supporting Ukraine, especially among those who understand the risks of Russian aggression.
