A meeting between NATO and Ukrainian ambassadors took place in Brussels, initiated by Kyiv over Russia’s launch of an experimental ballistic missile at Ukrainian territory. Last week’s incident escalated tensions between NATO countries and Moscow, which continues to use new means in its war against Ukraine. AFP reports.

Russia has used a new generation Oreshnik intermediate-range missile, which Moscow says cannot be intercepted. Russian President Vladimir Putin threatened to strike at countries that supply Ukraine with weapons, saying that the war is becoming “global”.

Ukraine’s call to strengthen defence

Ukraine has asked its allies to urgently provide modern missile defence systems to counter new threats. Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga said:

“Ukraine expects concrete solutions from its partners that will help protect our cities and civilians more effectively.”

The NATO-Ukraine Council, established in 2023, met to discuss these issues. During the meeting, the ambassadors were briefed by the Ukrainian side on the current situation at the front and the latest threats.

NATO’s response

NATO has assured that Russia’s actions will not force the allies to abandon their support for Ukraine. One of the Alliance’s diplomats emphasised:

“No new missiles or threats from Moscow will shake our unity and readiness to help Ukraine as long as it takes.”

Global tensions and new challenges

This escalation comes amid concerns among European countries about a possible decline in US support after the 2024 presidential election. A potential change in Washington’s political course, especially if Donald Trump returns to power, could be a decisive factor in further support for Ukraine.

Despite the difficult situation, the Ukrainian military continues to hold back the Russian offensive in the east and is preparing for possible new attacks in the south of the country, particularly in the Zaporizhzhia region.

Ukraine and its allies are determined to confront threats with determination, demonstrating steadfastness in the fight for freedom and security of the European continent.
