Shmyhal on the need to develop alternative routes due to the security situation in Ukraine

прем'єр-міністр України Денис Шмигаль

The Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal stressed the importance of developing alternative routes for the delivery of goods and passengers due to the impossibility of partially opening the airspace over Ukraine in the current security situation.

“We have conducted a risk assessment and identified the need for air defence forces and means to partially open the airspace. However, security and military issues remain key,” Shmyhal said during the International Transport Forum, Ukrinform reports.

He added that it is important to develop land routes through road and rail transport, as Russian attacks have significantly damaged Ukraine’s aviation infrastructure, including at least 15 civilian airports.

Since the beginning of Russia’s large-scale invasion of Ukraine, air traffic has been suspended, and although rumours of a possible resumption of flights have been circulating since April 2023, experts warn that ensuring the safety of passengers and crews during such flights is extremely challenging.
