Former Ukrainian Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin said that sending European troops to Ukraine could ensure the country’s security, especially if NATO membership is delayed. This was reported by Time Ukraine Israel, citing LIGA.net.
European soldiers as a possible defence
According to Klimkin, discussions in Europe about the possible presence of their troops in Ukraine have become serious. Although there are no concrete decisions yet, the discussion is ongoing and gaining weight.
“It’s not that European troops will be in Ukraine tomorrow, but the very fact of such a serious discussion is a significant step forward,” Klimkin said.
The role of the US in the process
Klimkin noted that under the administration of US President Donald Trump, Ukraine’s accession to NATO could be postponed. In such a situation, the presence of EU troops would be a temporary but important security guarantee.
“The Trump team has made it clear to European partners that the United States is ready to help resolve the war in Ukraine. At the same time, they expect Europe to take responsibility for this process,” Klimkin said.
However, according to him, the US side does not plan to deploy its troops in Ukraine or finance the stay of European soldiers.
Opportunities for support from the US
The former minister stressed that the United States could support this process in other ways, such as providing guarantees, information, advice or technical assistance.
“This does not mean that the United States stands aside. They can assist Europeans in various ways, and this interaction can be key to ensuring stability,” Klimkin said.
The discussion about sending European troops to Ukraine demonstrates the readiness of the EU and the US to support Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression. However, as Pavlo Klimkin emphasises, the implementation of such decisions requires clear coordination and political will on both sides.
