The occupation authorities continue to strengthen the defence of the Kerch Bridge, illegally built across the Kerch Strait. According to information obtained by Time Ukraine Israel, citing the Centre for Investigative Journalism (CIJ), the construction of a third tower to house a short-range air defence system, complementing the previously installed systems, has begun.
New construction details
The first and second towers, equipped with Pantsir-S1M surface-to-air missile gun systems, were spotted at the end of September 2024 on Tuzla Island. The third structure, according to the latest images, is located closer to the bridge, approximately in the area of the 10th span.
These towers have two main components: an internal part in the form of a transformable tower with stairs and an external metal structure that supports a platform for the combat module.
Probable purpose of the new facilities
Unlike the coastal towers, the third one is likely to be installed on additional parallel bridges with metal grilles that the occupiers have been building for more than six months. These structures have a dual function: as anti-drone protection for the bridge pylons and as a platform for air defence systems.
Increasing protective capacity
The Pantsir-S1M is capable of engaging air targets at an altitude of up to 15 km and within a radius of 20 km. At the same time, the systems can be combined into groups to expand the defence zone. Thus, each new Pantsyr tower significantly increases the chances of avoiding attacks by Ukrainian missiles and drones.
Overall strategy for defending the bridge
Russia began forming a layered defence system for the bridge in May 2024. Barges in two rows and boom barriers were installed then. In the summer, the occupiers added parallel anti-drone bridges, tetrapods and metal “hedgehogs”. In autumn, towers with Pantsyr complexes began to appear.
Russia’s attempts to build a strong defence of the Kerch Bridge reflect its fear of Ukrainian attacks. However, even the most advanced defence systems do not guarantee complete security. These measures only underscore the strategic importance of the bridge for the aggressor and Ukraine’s readiness to fight for the liberation of its territories.
