Ukraine initiates an extraordinary meeting of the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to be held on 12 December. This was announced by Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga on social networking site X.
“Ukraine is convening an extraordinary meeting of the IAEA Board of Governors on 12 December in response to Russia’s attacks on our critical energy infrastructure. Russian attacks on substations identified by the IAEA as important for nuclear safety pose a global threat,” Sibiga wrote.
This decision was a response to the recent shelling of energy infrastructure facilities, which not only threatens Ukraine’s energy supply but also poses a danger to global nuclear safety.
In particular, as previously reported, the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant was on the verge of blackout for the third time in November due to damage to the power line caused by Russian strikes. On the night of 3 December, Shahed drones damaged facilities in Ternopil and Rivne region, causing power outages.
Ukraine emphasises the need for a tough international response to Russia’s actions, which violate international law and threaten global stability. The IAEA meeting is expected to make important decisions on the safety of critical infrastructure in times of war.
