The American Film Academy has released a longlist of contenders for the most prestigious film award, the Oscar 2025, which includes three Ukrainian films. This was reported by the press service of the Ukrainian State Film Agency.
Among the 169 films competing for the awards, special attention was paid to works that reflect the current realities and multifaceted history of Ukraine:
- “La Palisade is directed by Philip Sotnychenko. The film takes viewers back to 1996, when Ukraine was taking its first steps as an independent state. The plot centres on a detective and a forensic psychiatrist investigating the mysterious murder of a policeman.
- “Porcelain War is a story about Kharkiv ceramic artists who stayed in the occupied city during the war. The characters fight against fear and the enemy invasion, preserving art and humanity.
- “Peaceful People is directed by Oksana Karpovych. A unique documentary project that combines radio intercepts of conversations between Russian occupiers and their families with visuals of the destruction caused by the war.
Ukrainian cinema on the world stage
The inclusion of these films in the Oscar longlist confirms the international relevance of Ukrainian stories and the skill of filmmakers who find new ways to tell the truth about war, culture and the resilience of our nation.
The award ceremony will take place on 3 March 2025 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. This is yet another opportunity for Ukraine to showcase its unique identity to the world through cinema.
