Romania’s Constitutional Court has cancelled the results of the first round of the presidential election after revealing the interference of the Russian Federation and large-scale cyberattacks. This was reported by Agerpress on Friday, 6 December.
The election results, which were won by pro-Russian far-right candidate Kelin Georgescu, were declared invalid. Known for his criticism of aid to Ukraine and his promises to ban the transit of Ukrainian grain, Georgescu also expressed doubts about Romania’s commitment to NATO.
This court ruling is unprecedented and has caused a political outcry both in Romania and abroad. According to the law, new presidential elections are to be called in the country.
Experts emphasise that the cancellation of the results is an important signal to combat foreign interference in the electoral process and confirms Bucharest’s determination to defend democratic values in the face of hybrid threats.
