US President Joe Biden has confirmed that about 80,000 US troops are deployed in NATO countries in Europe to support allies and deter potential Russian aggression. This is stated in a report sent by Biden to Congress, which was published by the White House on Friday.
This report is part of the US president’s commitment to inform lawmakers about the use of US military forces abroad under the War Powers Resolution Act. In his letter, Biden noted that the decision to deploy the military is a necessary response to security challenges, particularly after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
“Approximately 80,000 members of the U.S. military are deployed to NATO countries in Europe, including to support our allies and deter further Russian aggression,” the document says.
Deployment of forces after the Russian aggression in Ukraine
Since the beginning of 2022, following Russia’s attack on Ukraine, the Biden administration has significantly increased the US military presence in Europe. In particular, NATO’s decisions approved the creation of new multinational battlegroups on the eastern flank of the alliance. One of these groups, led by France, is based in Romania in the town of Cincu and will be expanded to the level of a brigade of about 4,000 troops by 2024. It includes contingents from the United States, France, Poland, Portugal and other countries.
Strengthening NATO’s infrastructure
The United States is also investing in the modernisation of key military facilities in Romania. In particular, the Mihailo Cogălnicănu airfield will become one of NATO’s largest bases by 2030, capable of accommodating more than 10,000 military and civilian personnel, some of whom will be relocated from the German Ramstein base. Such actions are intended to strengthen the Alliance’s defence capabilities and ensure the security of the region.
Strategic importance
These decisions demonstrate the seriousness of Washington’s intentions to ensure stability in Europe and counter the Russian threat. The deployment of US troops and the development of military infrastructure in the countries of NATO’s eastern flank is part of a broader strategy to strengthen the collective security of the alliance, especially in response to the Kremlin’s aggressive policies.
