The United States Army is one of the most powerful military organisations in the world. Servicemen receive remuneration that depends on their rank, length of service, conditions of service, and other factors. Let’s take a closer look at the salary system for each level of the military hierarchy, as reported by Time Ukraine Israel.

Privates: starting a military career

The service starts at the lowest level – Private (E-1). The starting salary is $1,917 per month, rising to $2,149 after six months. The next level, Private (E-2), provides $2,260 per month.

Private First Class (E-3) earns $2,435-$2,676 per month, depending on seniority. This period is considered preparatory for further career stages.

Lower NCOs: transition to leadership

The rank of Corporal or Specialist (E-4) allows you to earn $2,874-$3,416. Sergeants (E-5), who already perform leadership functions, have an income of $3,059 to $4,289.

Additional payments for hazardous conditions, field assignments or service in combat zones can increase income by 20-50%.

Middle NCOs: the basis of command

Mid-level sergeants, such as Staff Sergeant (E-6) and Sergeant First Class (E-7), receive between $3,848 and $6,083. Senior sergeants (E-8) have incomes ranging from $4,739 to $7,545. The highest level of the ranks, Sergeant Major (E-9), earns $6,055-$9,242 depending on experience.

Officers: the pinnacle of a military career

Officers are the key leaders of the army, so their salaries are much higher:

  • Second Lieutenant (O-1): $3,637-$4,576.
  • Captain (O-3): $5,491-$8,231.
  • Colonel (O-6): $7,644-$12,891.

Generals holding the highest position (O-10) can receive up to $16,608 per month.

Additional payments and benefits

The salaries of US military personnel are supplemented by numerous bonuses:

  • Housing Benefit (BAH): Up to $3,000 per month depending on the region of residence.
  • Food allowance (BAS): about $452 per month.
  • Hazardous duty allowance: $150-$250 per month.
  • Bonuses for signing a contract: $10,000-$40,000 for critical specialties.

Pension provision

After 20 years of service, military personnel are entitled to a pension equal to 50% of their average earnings over the last three years. Each additional year of service adds 2.5% to the pension.

The US military’s pay system is designed to provide competitive compensation that is fair for every level of service. In addition to the basic salary, military personnel receive significant fringe benefits and social perks, making service in the armed forces an attractive choice for many Americans.
