US President-elect Donald Trump has said that the United States should not intervene in the Syrian conflict, even though Syrian rebel forces are approaching the country’s capital, Damascus. He wrote about this on Saturday on his Truth Social platform, AFP reports.
“The situation in Syria is complicated, but it is not our ally, and the United States should not intervene. This is not our fight. Let everything take its course. We should not interfere!” Trump said a few minutes before meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron at the Elysee Palace.
Meanwhile, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad remains in Damascus and continues to perform his duties, the press service of the Syrian president said. Thus, Damascus has denied rumours of al-Assad’s flight from the country amid an active offensive by rebel forces advancing towards the capital from the northwest after a large-scale military operation.
The situation in Syria has deteriorated sharply, and events are developing against the backdrop of diplomatic efforts by key players in the region. Trump’s statement provoked a mixed reaction among US allies, who are calling for a more active role for the US in resolving the Syrian conflict.
